Which EV charging cable should you buy?
Choose between four Bosch Type 2-to-Type 2 cables by answering two practical questions: where you expect to charge and how much reach you need.

For most UK homes, the 11kW cable is enough for a 7.4kW wallbox and many 11kW AC setups. A 7kW wallbox operating for ten hours overnight could theoretically deliver around 70kWh before losses and charging taper, enough to refill many EV batteries. Most drivers are topping up rather than charging from nearly empty.

Why 11kW for home and everyday AC?
The cable rating is not the same thing as your home charger rating.
Most UK homes use a single-phase electricity supply and charge at around 7.4kW. An 11kW cable is therefore a sensible fit for many home wallboxes, as well as compatible 11kW three-phase setups.
An 11kW or 22kW home chargepoint normally requires a compatible three-phase supply. Installing three-phase equipment can be costly and may not be justified for a household that charges overnight.
When is 22kW worth considering?
Mainly when public or workplace AC charging is important.
A 22kW cable may be worthwhile if you regularly use untethered public AC chargepoints, your EV supports 22kW AC, and reducing AC charging time matters to you.
Rapid and ultra-rapid DC chargepoints are different: their CCS or CHAdeMO cable is normally attached to the charger, so you do not usually buy a separate DC cable.
What the UK public charging network means for your choice
Public AC charging is relevant, but the headline network figures do not tell you which individual points are tethered.
Department for Transport statistics recorded 121,171 public EV chargers in the UK on 1 July 2026. Of these, 49% were in the 3kW-to-under-8kW standard band and 27% in the 8kW-to-under-50kW standard-plus band. These bands include many chargers where AC charging may be relevant, but the statistics do not identify the exact AC power, connector or whether a cable is attached at each location.
Rapid and ultra-rapid chargers rated at 50kW or above represented the remaining 24%. These are typically used for en-route charging and normally have a tethered CCS or CHAdeMO cable, so they are not usually a reason to buy a separate cable.

A familiar engineering brand provides a useful quality signal when choosing a safety-critical accessory.
Bosch has a long-established pedigree in automotive and electrical engineering. Its Type 2 cable range provides the practical combinations most UK EV drivers are likely to consider: 11kW or 22kW, in 5-metre or 7-metre lengths.
The manufacturer information describes Type 2 connectors, Mode 3 charging, a carrying bag, IP44 protection while connected and IP54 protection with the caps fitted. These are manufacturer or listing claims, not an independent Fagan & Company product test.
The recommendation is therefore brand-led and practical, not a claim that Bosch is the only suitable cable or that we have independently ranked the market.
Type 2, AC and DC charging in plain English
AC charging is commonly used at home, at work and at destination chargepoints. Some AC chargepoints have a cable attached; others have a socket and require you to bring your own. Type 2-to-Type 2 is the common cable for modern UK EVs.
Rapid and ultra-rapid DC charging is generally used for longer journeys and quick top-ups. CCS, the Combined Charging System, and CHAdeMO cables are normally tethered to the charger.
The vehicle, chargepoint, electrical supply and cable all matter. The lowest limit sets the actual charging speed.
